You can, but you shouldn’t. While in some areas fuel storage can colors are traditional, in others, like California, the correct colors are specified by State regulations.
- Red is for gasoline, regardless if it is leaded or non-leaded.
- Yellow is for diesel fuel (#2) regardless of sulpher content (LSD or ULSD).
- Blue is for kerosene (#1).
Of course, diesel pumps in the US are marked with green which serves to confuse people especially those visiting from any where else in the world. For the US, we should stick to these international colors as they are recognized by firemen and other safety personnel that share the road with us.
Water can be carried in about anything as long as you don’t use red, yellow or blue. We carry our water in an orange construction type cooler or in the white translucent plastic containers in which it often comes.
