The Lost Ones

I think I see them more often now. A sign of the times? Sometimes on the highway. Most often for me the sightings are in the city, usually at intersections. I saw one today and the sighting made me think.

Some are old, used, lost or thrown away. Others are clean and bright, just starting out. They had found themselves needed, important only to loose it all in a moment. They can’t do it alone you see. It takes a team.

I often wonder how they get this way. Was there an accident and they were hurt and discarded? Did someone just forget to take them home? Does their family speak of them, “What did I do? What caused this painful separation”?

And for these lost ones and their sole mate, the future is not bright. No happy days with walks in the park or merrily skipping down the sidewalk. Eventually they will be thrown away or picked-up, most are.

Where they came from, what their color was doesn’t matter. They’ll be locked up with societies other trash, forgotten, not wanted. I know some of you have seen them laying on the street and some of you have even seen the other half.

All by themselves. Alone. A single shoe.
