Censorship vs greed – which way will Google go

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Google’s latest attempt to circumvent Chinese censorship by delivering content from Hong Kong failed. The old men who run China just don’t want their slaves learning about pro-democracy or what happened at Tiananmen Square.

Now some stock holder’s question if it is worth it? After all, if a few dissidents get ratted out and executed hey, that’s China’s fault. If the stock goes down that’s Google’s fault.

China’s maneuver, as well as its public rebuke of Google’s decision to stop censoring searches for the government, rattled some of the company’s investors, advertisers and users.

The chief concern is whether Google poisoned its business in one of the world’s most promising Internet markets. One analyst critical of Google’s move predicted the maneuver will cause the company’s stock to fall by as much as $50 — or about 10 percent — in the coming weeks.  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35997644/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/

It is too bad some investors don’t have a moral compass. Google does. I hope they hold out. When we start rewarding bad behavior of a nation with the continued trade benefits of most favored nation status we hurt ourselves and the people of China.

Would you grant our highest trade status to a country that

  • Sold automatic weapons to street gangs in LA?
  • Sells them to drug dealers in Mexico?
  • What about a country that extends prison sentences to keep prison labor on the job in the prison factories.
  • Uses “reform by labor” to sentence people to factories in order to produce cheaper exports for the U.S.?
  • Sold and continue to sell sensitive nuclear weapons related technology to Pakistan?

Today, our foreign policy and Wall Steet’s understanding of ethics is based upon three words: Greed, Greed, Greed.

It should be based upon what is right, upon freedom. Would you give up your underwear that is made in China to free someone? I would. How about a cooler? I would but I’m not saying cut off trade with China. Just don’t give them the same status as Japan or Canada or Mexico or India or France, etc., etc.

We should all be like Google. Choose the right side, the high side.

What haven’t they banned

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Among the 17 banned substances was boric acid, commonly used as an insecticide, which is mixed with noodles and meatballs to increase elasticity, a statement posted on the Ministry of Health Web site said. Also forbidden was industrial formaldehyde and lye, used in making soap and drain cleaner and added to water used to soak some types of dried seafood to make the products appear fresher and bigger.

They = China. Make sure your RV doesn’t have any food in it made in China. And your house.

Are you kidding me . . . formaldehyde? It seems to me we are not dealing with rocket scientists here. They are either greedy bast**ds or totally idiots. I think maybe greedy idiots.

Why do we accept any level of Melanine

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Melamine, which is used in products including plastics, paint and adhesives, can lead to kidney stones and possibly life-threatening kidney failure. Especially among children.

  •  China – Under guidelines adopted Wednesday, Melamine limits considered safe are set at 1.0 parts per million for infant formula and 2.5 parts per million for liquid milk, milk powder and food products that contain more than 15 percent milk.
  • US – The Food and Drug Administration says its experts have concluded that eating 2.5 parts per million of Melamine — a minuscule amount — would not raise health risks, even if a person ate food every day that was laced with it.
  • Hong Kong and New Zealand say Melamine in food products is considered safe at 2.5 parts per million or less, though Hong Kong has lowered the level for children under 3 and pregnant or lactating women to one part per million.

Was Melamine in our food 20 years ago? How about 10? Why do we accept any level of what is basically a poison to us in our food? The FDA “experts” say its ok? Well, that really doesn’t do much for me. The “experts” could probably make the same case for chicken guano – would you like any of that in your food?
