Adjusting the Koni shocks

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

When I got my Koni shocks for the rear I just put them on. I did not check to see if they were adjusted. I have been trying to get around to correcting that problem for sometime and finally, I can check it off the list. For me it is pretty easy as I do not have to take them off completely.

You need a couple of 18mm wrenches and after undoing the bottom bolt, collapse the shock. When it is collapsed turn the shock slowly and you will feel it engage in the adjustment mechanism. Now turn it left (counter clockwise) until it stops – that is the 0 point. Now mark the shock and sleeve as above.

Turn the shock to the right (clockwise) until it stops, counting the turns using the black marks as an aid. Now you know how many turns it is to full firmness. My left shock went 1-3/4 turns and my right went 2-1/4 turns. I am going to double check that next time, but for now, after returning to 0, I set each shock at 1-3/4 turns. I have no idea what that actually means so we will see how it “feels” on the road.

I have posted a new document in the Reference material section, a PDF from Koni on how to adjust shocks. It has a graph on page two that is totally useless.
